Doctors to strike..! Hurt over duty free vehicle permit withdrawal

(Lanka-e-News- 30.Nov.2015, 11.30AM) The government medical officers asociation (GMOA) which considers itself as a ‘Doctor caste ‘ that is superior to others  has decided  to stage a strike in the next few days to the detriment of the helpless patients they ought to serve selflessly, it is learnt.

The central committee of the GMOA that met on the 27 th  has arrived at this decision. What had driven  the GMOA to take this decision is , the withdrawal of the duty free permit for import of super luxury vehicles hitherto granted to all ministers downwards to government officers . It is the GMOA’s aim to include their salary increments too  in this impending  strike.

May we highlight  this ‘Doctor caste’ that  serve in the government sector are permitted to earn as much as they want through private practice. Even a government engineer or a lawyer is not entitled to such privileges. Even  in England where Democracy is of the five star level , government doctors are not allowed to earn via private practice . In England  even their own children cannot be medically treated by them privately.

Whereas , in Sri Lanka , the doctors are enjoying the maximum  special privileges and perks, as well as the opportunities to earn as much as they want via private practice. Besides a majority of them have become doctors  after taking advantage of the free education granted to them , which cost are met by the public fund collected through taxation on the hard earned monies of the common man.

It is a pity this ‘doctor caste’ which considers itself as superior to others has selfishly reckoned the new budget proposal of the present government in the larger interests of the entire nation , as hitting below the belt of the Doctors . Hence the nation hopes  they would at least at this crucial juncture of nation building put country  and the patients they must necessarily serve before self.

All this time the 'doctor caste' was taking the entire country and the government for a selfish ride. Now it it time to stop and the government should take the rains. Doctors should issue receipts to the patients for money they charge and the government should collect the right taxes from them as from any other business.

Why is that only the doctor caste has to enjoy special privileges. They get free education, then they get the opportunity to have a private practice not allowed to any other govt employee and then a duty free car? Arent other govt employees too doing a job? In fact no govt employee should be allowed private practice. The govt should permit private medical colleges so that there are more doctors and we reach the doctor to population ratios of the developed nations.
