(Lanka-e-News - 04.Sep.2015, 9.30PM) The resolution tabled by the prime minister (P.M.) to incease the mumber of ministers of the cabinet of the United government in parliament was adopted with a majority of 127 votes , after the debate requested by the JVP was taken up yesterday(03)
143 voted for it while 16 voted against. 63 M.P.s were not present. Accordingly, the number of ministers of the national government cabinet shall not exceed 48, while the number of state and deputy ministers shall not exceed 45.
The 5 JVP M.P.s (Mayadunne resigned in the morning) , the five members of Wimal Weerawansa’s party , Vasudeva , Dinseh Gunawardena , Gammanpila and three members of the SLFP voted with the opposition . The three Rajapakses , Chamal , Mahinda and Namal did not attend parliament yesterday.
Except Sampanthan, all other M.P.s of the TNA were absent in parliament.
Based on the 19 th amendment to the constitution , the number of ministers should not exceed 30. However if a national government is to be formed , and if the number of ministers , deputy ministers and State ministers are to be increased , the parliamentary approval must be obtained.
It is learnt that the new cabinet will be sworn in 4th september.
