(Lanka-e-News -06.Aug.2025, 7.15 PM) The Colombo Magistrate's Court has ordered that former State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the Bribery Commission this morning (06) at a house in Nugegoda, be remanded until the 19th.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate, Ms. Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga, issued this order after considering the arguments presented by the Bribery Commission officials and the defense lawyers.
Several properties, including a building constructed illegally on land in the Kiriibban Wewa area of Sevanagala, belonging to the Mahaweli Authority, were damaged during the public protest held on 09.05.2022.
When paying compensation for the said property, the officials identified it as a property owned by the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority and refused to pay the relevant compensation. Despite this, Shashindra Rajapaksa has been accused of using his official power to influence and obtain compensation from some government officials who were attached to the Office for Compensation.
Reportedly, over Rs. 150 million has been obtained as compensation for a building that did not exist and was destroyed by fire.
Shashindra Rajapaksa was also arrested for committing the offence of corruption and conspiracy by obtaining the compensation, and for criminal misappropriation of property owned by the Mahaweli Authority, as this property was located on land owned by the Mahaweli Authority, and was therefore punishable under Section 5(1) of the Offences under Public Property Act No. 12 of 1982, as amended by Act No. 28 of 1999.
An investigation is also underway against Shashindra Rajapaksa regarding corruption committed in the import of organic fertilizer during the Gotabaya era.
