Hanuman Chosen to Lead the Opposition?

(Lanka-e-News -25.July.2025, 8.00 PM) Confidential discussions emerge over potential ouster of Sajith Premadasa as Opposition Leader

In an unexpected political twist, revelations have surfaced regarding confidential discussions aimed at removing Sajith Premadasa from his position as Leader of the Opposition in Sri Lanka. According to sources privy to the deliberations, a serious internal reassessment is underway within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), with several names being discreetly floated as potential successors.

Among the frontrunners reportedly being considered are MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, economist-turned-MP Dr Harsha de Silva, and notably, an unnamed female parliamentarian whose profile is said to be gaining traction in backroom conversations.

What appears most striking, however, is that a growing faction within the SJB is said to be advocating for an entirely new figure—someone free from the political shadows of both Sajith Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe. This group, insiders say, believes that a clean break from both camps would offer the opposition a much-needed ideological reset and a stronger electoral strategy ahead of the next polls.

Observers note that Dayasiri Jayasekara’s emergence in these conversations raises eyebrows, particularly given his recent public pronouncements echoing ethno-religious rhetoric reminiscent of the Rajapaksa camp. Critics argue that his political tone, increasingly nationalist and religious in nature, appears to be part of a calculated repositioning designed to appeal to a broader, more conservative base.

While no formal moves have been made as of yet, the growing murmur within SJB ranks indicates a party at a crossroads—torn between continuity under Sajith and a bold new direction that, ironically, may look more like Hanuman than Hercules.
