(Lanka-e-News -03.May.2025, 11.10 PM) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has departed Sri Lanka just moments ago, embarking on a state visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese President Luong Cuong.
This marks President Dissanayake’s latest diplomatic foray as head of state, underscoring Colombo’s growing interest in strengthening political, economic, and ideological ties with Hanoi.
The official itinerary, spanning May 4th to 6th, includes bilateral meetings with President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. Additionally, President Dissanayake is expected to meet with senior leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, including its General Secretary.
A highlight of the visit will be President Dissanayake’s keynote address at the United Nations Vesak Day celebrations in Ho Chi Minh City on May 6th, where he will serve as the event’s principal guest of honour.
Diplomatic sources also confirm that several memoranda of understanding will be signed between the two nations during the visit, aimed at deepening cooperation in trade, labour, tourism, and cultural exchange.
The President will also engage with members of Vietnam’s business community, in what is being described as an effort to encourage greater investment and economic collaboration between the two countries.
Accompanying the President on this state visit are Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Mr. Vijitha Herath, along with a delegation of senior government officials.
This visit comes amid Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to recalibrate its foreign policy posture, moving beyond traditional regional alliances and forging new partnerships across Asia.
