(Lanka-e-News -25.April.2025, 10.25 PM) Sri Lanka has successfully concluded high-level discussions with American officials concerning the newly imposed US tariff regime, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Labour, Dr. Anil Jayantha, confirmed yesterday.
Speaking at a press briefing held on the 24th, Dr. Jayantha revealed that the opportunity for bilateral engagement arose during his recent visit to the United States, which also included meetings with the International Monetary Fund. The discussions, according to the Minister, were marked by a spirit of cooperation and strategic diplomacy.
Highlighting Sri Lanka's proactive approach, Dr. Jayantha noted that only India and Sri Lanka had been invited by Washington for talks specifically focused on the new tariff measures affecting the Asian region. “This clearly demonstrates that timely diplomacy and professional conduct by the Sri Lankan delegation are earning recognition on the international stage,” he said.
According to Dr. Jayantha, the dialogue with US trade officials paves the way for enhanced economic and trade cooperation between the two nations. “This is not merely about managing a new tax regime,” he added, “but about positioning Sri Lanka as a responsible and responsive partner in global commerce.”
He further stated that the government will soon announce the next steps in consolidating commercial ties with the United States, signalling that the groundwork has already been laid for a more mutually beneficial trade relationship.
