Dr. Ruvaiz Hanifa and the Ghost of M.H. Mohammed’s Past

A Tale of Impeachments, Iron Ore, and Convenient Amnesia

(Lanka-e-News -27.March.2025, 11.20 PM) Sri Lanka’s political circus never fails to amuse, and this time, the spotlight is on Dr. Ruvaiz Hanifa, grandson of the infamous M.H. Mohammed—the man who pulled off one of the greatest political disappearing acts in history. Back in the day, when 120 MPs boldly endorsed an impeachment against President Premadasa, Speaker M.H. Mohammed was entrusted with delivering justice. Instead, he took a mysterious trip to India and—surprise, surprise!—came back with a suddenly altered perspective. The impeachment ended up in the dustbin, and whispers of money changing hands still linger like a bad political aftertaste.

The Great Betrayal: A Masterclass in Political Acrobatics

Let’s rewind to the scandal that still haunts Sri Lanka’s political history. The impeachment against Premadasa wasn’t just a casual political quarrel—it was a detailed six-page resolution kept under wraps by opposition lawmakers, accusing the President of constitutional violations and, let’s just say, questionable decision-making skills.

Among the juicier details were allegations that:

  • Premadasa appointed Prime Minister D.B. Wijetunga against constitutional protocol.

  • He was mentally and physically unfit for office.

  • His wife, Hema Premadasa, was accused of moral turpitude (whatever that meant in political circles back then).

The impeachment had momentum. It had signatures. It had scandal. But then, like a magician vanishing a rabbit, M.H. Mohammed made the entire resolution disappear.

A Quick “Business Trip” to India

It’s a tale as old as politics itself—a trip abroad, a sudden change of heart, and a conveniently discarded impeachment. By the time M.H. Mohammed returned from his little Indian adventure, he had magically transformed from Impeachment Conductor to Political Amnesia Patient.

Rumors of financial incentives started swirling. Could it be that M.H. Mohammed's newfound loyalty had a price tag? Given that he later found himself under several Presidential Commissions for corruption—including accepting funds from Arab donors—one might say his ethical compass was as stable as a three-legged chair.

The Family Business: From Buses to Billions

Let’s not forget the honorable Transport Minister M.H. Mohammed, who allegedly sold hundreds of buses to India—not for infrastructure development, but as iron ore. Sri Lanka’s public transport system was effectively melted down and shipped off, while the Mohammed family’s fortunes conveniently heated up abroad. Properties popped up in the UK and India, luxury lifestyles flourished, and yet, Sri Lankan Muslims—the very people those Arab donations were meant to uplift—saw none of it.

Which brings us to today’s burning question: Dr. Ruvaiz Hanifa, where’s the money?

Grandfather’s Sins, Grandson’s Silence

Dr. Ruvaiz Hanifa, now stepping into the political arena as an SJB mayoral candidate, is in an awkward position. On one hand, he presents himself as a clean, respectable doctor. On the other, his grandfather’s legacy of vanishing funds and vanishing impeachments looms over him like a bad medical diagnosis.

So, Dr. Hanifa, we have a few questions for you:

  1. Will you apologize for your grandfather’s role in betraying the impeachment process?

  2. Will you support an investigation into how much money was exchanged to kill the impeachment?

  3. Would you be so kind as to return the billions your grandfather allegedly received from Arab donors—money meant for Sri Lankan Muslims but mysteriously invested in properties and vehicle dealerships abroad?

After all, transparency is key, isn’t it? Or will we see yet another case of political amnesia running in the family?

Sri Lanka is watching. And this time, there’s no India trip to make the problem disappear.
