Nine Sri Lankans Nabbed with Fake Canadian Visas: The Great Departure Lounge Debacle

-By Investigative Reporter

(Lanka-e-News -26.March.2025, 11.50 PM) In an epic plot twist at Katunayake Airport, nine Sri Lankan passengers found themselves departing not to Canada but straight into the hands of the authorities. Their crime? Sporting what might be the most expensive counterfeit visas in recent history—at a whopping Rs. 4.5 million a pop.

The drama unfolded on Monday evening, 26th of the March-2025, when one particularly unlucky passenger was questioned by eagle-eyed immigration officials. After a thorough technological once-over, it was revealed that while his passport was as authentic as Sri Lankan tea, his Canadian work visa was as fake as a three-dollar bill. Like any good mystery, this revelation triggered a domino effect, leading to the discovery of eight more suspects loitering in the departure lounge with similarly questionable paperwork.

Further investigations peeled back more layers of this visa heist, revealing a mastermind operating from Canada—presumably enjoying maple syrup and Tim Hortons while pulling the strings. The local agent, who played the role of travel coordinator-cum-scammer-in-chief, had even gone the extra mile, treating his “clients” to a cozy hotel stay in Negombo before chauffeuring them to their inevitable downfall at the airport. Talk about premium service!

In a swift counter-move, officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) raided the Negombo hotel and arrested the local agent, who is now likely regretting his career choice. His international ringleader, however, remains at large—probably busy figuring out his next fraudulent business venture, possibly in fake Antarctic visas.

With border controls tightening and the rise of e-visa systems, con artists like these are finding it increasingly difficult to trick the system. This particular crew's attempt to 'sneak' into Canada has instead earned them a not-so-coveted spot in the CID's interrogation room.

Meanwhile, legitimate travelers are advised to double-check their documents, lest they find themselves starring in the next great immigration scandal at Katunayake. And for those considering a similar shortcut to North America—maybe just try applying the legal way. It’s a lot cheaper and doesn’t come with handcuffs.
