Minister Bimal Takes the Wheel: Steering the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -25.March.2025, 10.45 PM) In a move that has sent ripples across both the political and diplomatic ponds, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake, has been elected Chair of the Sri Lanka-China Parliamentary Friendship Association. One could say he now has the responsibility of navigating not just traffic jams, but also the ever-intriguing crossroads of international diplomacy.

Presiding over this politically cordial gathering on March 21 was none other than Speaker (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, who appeared keen to remind everyone that Sri Lanka and China go way back—centuries, in fact. While some might argue that political friendships tend to wax and wane depending on economic winds, the re-establishment of this association signals that Sri Lanka’s long-standing ties with the Middle Kingdom are far from running out of steam.

Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, present as the chief guest, was all smiles as he acknowledged the enduring cooperation between the two nations. After all, China has been a steadfast friend in both stormy and sunny times, whether through infrastructure investments or timely economic assistance. And let's not forget the ‘colossal’ reminders of China’s presence in Colombo’s ever-changing skyline.

Also joining the party was the newly elected Secretary of the Association, MP (Ms.) Lakmali Hemachandra, Attorney-at-Law, who wasted no time in reiterating the commitment to keeping these diplomatic fires burning.

Minister Bimal, now donning his new hat as the Chair, took the moment to reflect on China’s unwavering support for Sri Lanka. He spoke of the invaluable knowledge-sharing potential in areas such as education and trade—perhaps a nod to the ever-expanding Belt and Road Initiative and its undeniable impact on the region.

But let’s not forget the broader picture. While these diplomatic friendships look great in press releases, the real test lies in implementation. Will this Association manage to turn discussions into action? Or will it simply remain another ornate fixture in Sri Lanka’s bustling political landscape?

For now, Minister Bimal has been handed the wheel. Whether he’ll drive Sri Lanka-China relations into a new golden era or simply hit the same old political potholes—only time will tell.
