SJB Chairman Imtiaz Bakeer Markar: Gone for Good and Wandering Beruwala Without a Title

-By Political Correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -23.March.2025, 10.45 PM) Imtiaz Bakeer Markar has officially entered the political wilderness, and guess what? No one is looking for him. Once the Chairman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), he now roams Beruwala like a retired sea captain who lost both his ship and his map. The party gave him the boot, and, as the old saying goes, "There are no personal sympathies in politics"—a truth that even Margaret Thatcher would have nodded to in approval.

For those keeping track of Bakeer Markar’s family history, this scene might feel oddly familiar. His mother once wandered house to house looking for work after Senior Bakeer Markar (former Speaker of Parliament) threw her out when he upgraded to a new wife. Now, history repeats itself—except this time, it’s politics doing the throwing.

The VAT Scam, The Kill List, and a Not-So-Brilliant Political Legacy

Imtiaz Bakeer Markar might have mastered the art of political speeches, speaking like an intellectual, but let’s not forget the VAT scam he was allegedly involved in. Taxpayers would love a refund, Imtiaz—where’s the cheque?

But wait, there’s more! This isn't just about tax money gone missing. Back in the dark days of 1988-89, when Sri Lanka was a battleground of political terror, Bakeer Markar allegedly handed over a list of names to paramilitary groups, resulting in the kidnapping, torture, and execution of over 600 youths—mostly from Beruwala, Payagala, Maggona, and Monaragala. Among the victims? Current JVP Secretary-General Tilvin Silva. Some say Bakeer Markar played matchmaker between the UNP and death squads, listing out "targets" who would later vanish into places like the infamous Boom Buula torture chamber in Kalutara.

If that wasn't enough, whispers of his involvement in the shooting of a Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) member in China Fort also continue to circulate. For someone who preaches democratic values, he sure seems to have a few skeletons in the closet—or in this case, an entire graveyard.

The Education Mystery: A Law Degree or a Political Free Pass?

Then there’s the question of his law degree. Is it real? Is it borrowed? Or is it one of those "honorary" degrees given out in exchange for a few favors? With Bakeer Markar, you never really know.

Meanwhile, his children seem to have had an easier time finding jobs than an overqualified Sri Lankan graduate. Thanks to daddy dearest, they’ve been comfortably placed in international organizations like UNDP and others. Meritocracy? What’s that?

The Fall of a Political Card House

Imtiaz, your political deck of cards has collapsed. The SJB has discarded you, the people are questioning you, and history is demanding some long-overdue answers.

You need to:

  1. Pay back the VAT scam money—we're not talking Monopoly money here, but real taxpayer rupees.

  2. Come clean about your alleged role in the 1988-89 disappearances—because Sri Lanka has not forgotten.

  3. Answer for your past crimes—unless, of course, Beruwala’s beaches have become your new courtroom.

As you wander Beruwala, perhaps you’ll have time to reflect. After all, it’s hard to play politics when you’ve lost your seat, your title, and—most importantly—your credibility.
