The event brought together members of the Sri Lankan community, diplomatic representatives, and officials from the UK Government to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and Sri Lanka’s rich cultural diversity.
The evening commenced with a solemn recitation of the Qur’an, followed by its translation. This was followed by two emotionally uplifting nasheed performances that set the tone for the evening’s theme of unity, reflection, and faith.
Addressing the distinguished gathering, the Acting High Commissioner underscored the significance of Ramadan as a time of spiritual rejuvenation and unity. She highlighted the deep cultural impact of the Sri Lankan Muslim community and their contributions to the country’s historical and cultural fabric. Her speech, which explored the profound impact of the Islamic cultural renaissance on Central Asia, South Asia, and Europe, was a testament to the deep historical and intellectual connections between Islamic and global civilizations. The emphasis on the contributions of Persian and Arabic empires to global progress was particularly well received, with attendees describing her address as a masterpiece of diplomatic articulation. Her remarks were met with admiration and appreciation from all present at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London, located near Hyde Park.
A key guest speaker at the event, Dr. Wajid Akhter, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, shared his thoughts on Sri Lanka’s renewed aspirations under its current government. Further enriching the evening’s discussions, Mr. Shakeer Nawas, President of COSMOS UK, and Ash Sheikh Arkam Nooramith, Secretary General of the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama, also addressed the gathering. Sheikh Nooramith, a respected Sri Lankan religious leader currently visiting the UK, emphasized the spiritual essence of Ramadan.
