SJB MP Marikar’s Economic Wisdom: A Masterclass in Cluelessness

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -10.March.2025, 11.10 PM)  In the latest episode of "Politicians Say the Darndest Things," SJB MP S.M. Marikar has once again graced us with his economic expertise—or rather, the glaring lack of it. This time, he’s up in arms about the NPP government’s dealings with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), claiming it’s a catastrophe for Sri Lanka.

According to Marikar, the IMF program is the root cause of all economic woes, from high electricity bills to fuel prices that haven’t magically plummeted overnight. But here’s the kicker: even his own party, the SJB, has accepted the IMF program. Unless Marikar has a secret stash of $65 billion lying around to pay off Sri Lanka’s entire debt, walking away from the IMF isn't even an option. So, if the SJB is on board with it, what exactly is he ranting about?

Perhaps Marikar believes economic recovery should come from divine intervention rather than structured debt negotiations. Or maybe he thinks running a country is as simple as running a TV show—after all, before his political career, he was busy working under the Maharaja network. A fine training ground for dramatic monologues, no doubt, but not quite the credentials one would expect from someone commenting on economic policy.

What’s truly baffling is that he speaks with such confidence despite having zero expertise in the subject. No economic background, no financial research—just a microphone and a passion for baseless accusations. If there were a degree in “Talking Loudly Without Making Sense,” Marikar would graduate summa cum laude.

So, dear MP, here’s a piece of free advice: if you don’t understand economics, maybe leave it to those who do. After all, misleading the public with half-baked statements is not a great look—especially when your own party supports the very thing you’re opposing. And as for your qualifications? Well, let’s just say the public might start asking some uncomfortable questions soon.
