The Great NXT Conclave Mislead: Ranil Wickremesinghe’s History Lesson Gone Wrong

By A LeN Political Correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -02.March.2025, 7.45 AM)  Colombo, Sri Lanka – The 2025 NXT Conclave was meant to be a platform for insightful discussions on the future of South Asia. Instead, it became an intellectual rollercoaster led by none other than Sri Lanka’s former President and serial Prime Minister-for-Life Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Armed with a suit, a microphone, and his well-practiced “I know everything” smirk, Ranil took the stage, ready to enlighten the world. What followed was a masterclass in historical distortion, economic fantasy, and self-promotion.

Ranil’s South Asia Theory: Rewriting History on the Spot

In what can only be described as a brave but disastrous attempt at rewriting history, Ranil declared that the term “South Asia” was invented by the USA after World War II.

Yes, you read that right. Forget centuries of historical references in Pali, Sanskrit, and Arabic texts. Forget that the region has been identified for over a thousand years. According to Ranil, the Americans came up with it over a cup of coffee in 1945.

Historians, linguists, and anyone with a Google search bar collectively facepalmed. But Ranil, ever the smooth talker, continued as if he had just revealed a hidden secret of world history.

It was at this moment that the international audience realized they were witnessing a masterclass in misinformation—delivered with absolute confidence.

Ranil Talks Civilization – While Forgetting His Own Bloody Past

Not stopping at historical inaccuracies, Ranil took the audience on a grand tour of civilizational greatness. He spoke of:

  • The Indus Valley Civilization (Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, as if he were an archaeologist),

  • The sacred Ganges (because why not bring in some spirituality while misleading people?),

  • The economic rise of South Asia (with wildly inflated numbers that even the IMF would be shocked to see).

But while he was busy glorifying history, there was one historical fact he conveniently forgot: his own past.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is not just a former President or Prime Minister. He is also known as the Butcher of Batalanda—a title earned for his alleged role in human rights abuses, torture, and the disappearance of over 60,000 Sri Lankan youth in the 1980s and 90s.

So, naturally, hearing Ranil lecture on civilization and economic prosperity was like listening to a burglar give a TED Talk on home security.

Fantasy Economics: How Ranil Sold a Dream to India

With all the confidence of a man who once bankrupted his own country, Ranil turned his attention to India.

With an enthusiastic wave of his hand, he announced that India would become a $50 trillion economy by 2050.

The audience gasped. Not because they were impressed, but because even India’s own economists don’t make such wild predictions.

Ranil conveniently ignored:

  • India’s poverty levels,

  • The reality of wealth inequality,

  • The fact that even the USA isn’t at $50 trillion.

But why bother with facts when you can sound smart at an international summit?

Mr. Wickremesinghe’s Greatest Magic Trick: Bankrupting Sri Lanka Five Times

As Ranil dazzled the audience with his economic fairy tales, one crucial detail was left out—his personal contribution to Sri Lanka’s financial doom.

For those who don’t know, Ranil Wickremesinghe was Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister not once, not twice, but five times. And what was his grand achievement?

Bankruptcy.

  • Sri Lanka, under his leadership, became the first Asian country to default on its debts in the 21st century.

  • Billions of dollars disappeared, including funds from the infamous Central Bank Bond Scam.

  • The country fell into its worst economic crisis, with people waiting in fuel queues for days while Ranil enjoyed his luxurious life.

So, when Mr. Wickremesinghe stood on the stage of the NXT Conclave, preaching about economic miracles, it was truly a comedy special in the making.

Ranil’s True Purpose: Photo Ops with Modi

The climax of the event came when Ranil met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Now, normally, diplomatic meetings are about serious discussions. But not this one.

Ranil’s sole mission was to get a photo with Modi—the ultimate showman’s souvenir.

Just before leaving the conclave, he casually strolled over to Modi, shook his hand, and flashed his best "I’m important too" smile. Snap! The photo was taken.

Mission accomplished.

Later, his PR team blasted the image across every Sri Lankan newspaper and social media platform, making it seem as if he had just secured a billion-dollar deal for Sri Lanka. In reality, he had simply done what every tourist in Delhi does—taken a picture with a famous person.

Can the World Please Stop Inviting This Man?

After this disaster of a speech, one question remains:

Why does the international community keep inviting Ranil Wickremesinghe to global summits?

  • He misleads people with distorted facts.

  • He bankrupts economies instead of fixing them.

  • He turns global forums into personal PR campaigns.

It’s high time the world stops falling for this political magician’s tricks.

Let Ranil enjoy his luxurious life—but please, for the sake of sanity, keep him away from history books, economic forums, and microphones.

Final Thought:

Ranil Wickremesinghe at an economic summit is like a wolf giving a lecture on vegetarianism.

Time to move on from the Butcher of Batalanda.
