Karma Strikes Deshabandu Tennakoon! Arrest Warrant Issued for Conspiracy to Murder – And He’s Gone Into Hiding!

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -28.Feb.2025, 11.20 PM)  A court order has been issued for the arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, along with former Colombo Crime Division (CCD) Chief Inspector Anselm de Silva and six other former CCD officers. Matara Magistrate Arun Buddhadasa ordered their arrest today on charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

This is in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on December 31, 2023, in front of the W15 Hotel in Pelana, Weligama, Matara.

Following a magisterial inquiry into the death of police sergeant Upul Kumara, who was serving in the CCD at the time, the court concluded that it was a homicide. The judge ordered that Deshabandu and his associates be arrested and produced in court under charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

Deshabandu Mysteriously Disappears

According to reports from Lanka e News, Deshabandu Tennakoon has vanished without informing even his personal security officer (PSO).

This case revolves around a dramatic series of events that unfolded after the shooting at the W15 Hotel in Weligama. Lanka e News had reported on this incident at the time, and today's court ruling has confirmed the accuracy of those reports.

The Weligama Shooting – A Web of Crime and Cover-Ups?

On January 1, 2024, Lanka e News reported that a police officer attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) was shot dead, while another officer was injured, following a confrontation near the W15 Hotel in Weligama.

According to internal sources, the entire incident was linked to an undercover drug operation, which seemingly turned into a botched assassination attempt or a gang-style shootout.

At dawn on December 31, a group of individuals arrived in a KDH van at the W15 Hotel and opened fire before attempting to flee. However, a mobile police patrol from the Weligama station, which was engaged in an anti-narcotics operation, was stationed nearby and responded immediately.

As the suspects fled, the police chased them down. The van was eventually stopped near the entrance to the Southern Expressway at Imaduwa. When officers attempted to inspect the vehicle, the occupants identified themselves as CCD officers from Colombo. However, they were initially denied entry onto the highway.

It was only after an order from a senior police official that the group was allowed to proceed. By then, one officer had already succumbed to gunshot wounds, and another was critically injured.

A Failed Media Stunt?

Further investigations revealed that the van carrying the suspects had departed from Colombo the previous night, allegedly transporting 15 kilograms of narcotics. This operation had not been sanctioned by any senior officers in the Southern Province, raising serious concerns about its legitimacy.

Sources suggest that the plan was to frame the W15 Hotel as a drug hub and stage a dramatic media operation showcasing a supposed anti-narcotics raid. The hotel's owner, the son of businessman A.J.M. Musamil, had reportedly refused to pay extortion money to certain officials, making his property a target.

However, the plan fell apart when hotel staff noticed the suspicious individuals, leading to an unexpected shootout and police intervention. The fleeing suspects did not stop when ordered by officers, prompting police to open fire.

Despite the suspects’ efforts to frame the incident as a gang shootout, the court’s latest decision suggests that a much darker plot was at play.

Where is Deshabandu?

As authorities move to arrest those involved, the biggest question remains—where is Deshabandu Tennakoon? His sudden disappearance adds another layer of mystery to an already convoluted case.

For now, Sri Lanka watches as yet another high-profile scandal unfolds, proving once again that truth, like fuel prices, is always subject to change.
