Prime Minister Expresses Displeasure Over Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage’s Remarks!

(Lanka-e-News -24.Feb.2025, 11.20 PM) Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has stated that she does not approve of the remarks made by Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage regarding Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament Rohini Kavirathna.

She further commented that it would have been better if what happened yesterday had not occurred.

Elaborating on her stance, the Prime Minister said:

"That was inappropriate. I was not present at the time. However, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa immediately rejected the statement at the very moment it was made. He intervened to correct it."

"Even if our government makes a mistake, we take steps to correct it. We do not endorse such actions. Mistakes can happen, but we take responsibility for addressing them."

"Just because it’s one of our own, we don’t justify wrongdoing. It would have been better if what happened yesterday had not taken place."

The controversy arose when Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage, during a parliamentary session yesterday, made a statement regarding Matale District MP Rohini Kavirathna. He referred to a newspaper notice that allegedly announced a change in her name.

His statement was as follows:

"Rohini Kavirathna. The other day, I saw a newspaper notice stating that the name had been changed. It read: 'I, Rohini Kavirathna, hereby inform the people of Sri Lanka that from today onwards, my name will be changed to Rohini Lammarathna.' Should I also mention what was said about this 'Lammarathna' name?"

This remark has sparked criticism, prompting the Prime Minister to clarify her stance and distance the government from Hewage’s statement.
