(Lanka-e-News -22.Feb.2025, 11.30 PM) Police have identified 25-year-old Pingpura Devage Ishara Sewwandi as a suspect who assisted the shooter in the murder of organized crime gang leader Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathna, also known as "Ganemulla Sanjeewa," in court. Although police have been unable to locate her so far, Lanka e News' internal information service reports that she is expected to surrender to the court soon through a lawyer.
Police state that the shooter, Samindu Dilshan Piyumanga Kadanarachchi, has confessed that Ishara Sewwandi provided him with the 9mm revolver used in the shooting inside the court premises.
This case is considered unusual, as the revolver was allegedly smuggled in using a book titled Criminal Procedure Code, which is now considered court evidence. Furthermore, the judge presiding over the case is also expected to be a witness to the crime.
Eyewitnesses claim that when Ganemulla Sanjeewa was taken to the dock, the courtroom was cleared, and the doors were locked. Once Sanjeewa was placed in the dock, the shooter, disguised as a lawyer, approached him pretending to be the junior counsel of Sanjeewa’s senior lawyer. He asked Sanjeewa what he should say in court. At that moment, Sanjeewa, standing with his hands behind his back, moved closer to the disguised shooter. The shooter then fired six bullets into Sanjeewa's chest.
After the shooting, the shooter dropped the revolver, unlocked the courtroom doors, and casually walked out, telling the STF officers stationed outside, "There's been a shooting inside."
According to reports, the shooter was later apprehended at a security checkpoint in the Puttalam-Palaviya area by STF officers. By that time, the female suspect had already exited the vehicle and escaped.
Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathna, known as Ganemulla Sanjeewa, came from a respectable family. His father was a telephone operator at a government institution, his mother was a government nurse, and his brother was a radiography technician at a government hospital. His two sisters were also government nurses. Sanjeewa's wife was a nurse, and their daughter was a medical student.
Sanjeewa became involved in criminal activities after completing his A/L exams. He reportedly got entangled in the underworld through friends he met at a gym. Over time, he became deeply involved in organized crime.
Prisons Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake revealed that Sanjeewa had 22 pending court cases, including 19 murder charges.
As of now, five suspects, including two police constables, have been arrested in connection with Sanjeewa’s murder.
