Warmth travels thousand miles, crossing mountains and seas-The Chinese Embassy distributed food packages to flood-affected families of Northern Province

(Lanka-e-News -18.Feb.2025, 11.00 PM) From 9 to 10 February, Mr. Zhu Yanwei, Charge d'affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy, led a working group on a journey of over 1,000 kilometers to visit Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, and Mannar of Northern Province and distributed food packages to the local people who are severely affected by the recent floods. During the visit, Mr. Zhu met with Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, and Mr. Nagalingam Vethanayagam, Governor of Northern Province, and held discussions with representatives from Jaffna District Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Union’s Federation.

Addressing the local communities, Mr. Zhu said that China and Sri Lanka have been traditional friendly neighborswith exchanges spanning more than 2,000 years. Over the past 68 years since establishing diplomatic relations, the two countries have consistently supported each other and have become a model for South-South cooperation. The Chinese Government and people share the pain and suffering caused by the recent successive torrential rains in Northern Province resulting in casualties and property losses. The Embassy made a special trip to distribute food packages to people in need, whichreflected the genuine care and compassion of the Chinese people, in the hope of helpinglocal people overcome the temporary difficulties. Earlier this year, during H.E. President Dissanayake’s state visit to China, the leaders of both countries confirmed their commitment to deepening the China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership and jointly building a China-Sri Lankacommunitywith a shared future. Looking ahead, China will make every effort to implement the important consensus reached by thePresidents and, as always, provide Sri Lanka with assistance to the best of our ability, so as to bring greater benefits to the two countries and peoples. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with kind and wise people, and it is destined for an even brighter future.

Minister Chandrasekar and Governor Vethanayagam expressed their gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for her timely and sincere assistance to the flood-affected people of Northern Province. They took China as a true friend, echoing the sentiment that "a friend in need is a friend indeed." They also expressed hope for China’s continued valuable support in promoting economic development and improving livelihoods in the region. Officials and residents from Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffnaand Mannar warmly welcomed Mr. Zhu and his colleagues’visit and sincerely thanked China for its significant assistance. The people of Northern Province will always remember this act of kindness and wish that the friendship between the two countries will last forever. Local media provided extensive coverage, highly praisingthis visit and highlighting the deep bond of friendship between the two peoples.
