Sajith vs. AKD’s Budget: A Masterclass in Clueless Criticism

-By A Special Correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -17.Feb.2025, 10.20 PM) Sri Lanka’s opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa, has once again graced the nation with his expert economic analysis—if by “expert” we mean wildly uninformed and entirely performative. This time, he’s set his sights on the 2025 budget, presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD), calling it an “IMF budget.” Shocking, isn’t it? A country that is literally surviving on IMF lifelines is implementing an IMF-aligned budget? Someone alert the Nobel Prize committee—Sajith has cracked the code!

A Lesson in Economics (That Sajith Missed)

Now, let’s break this down. Sri Lanka is in an IMF program because—surprise, surprise—we don’t have money. Years of economic mismanagement, debt-fueled spending, and good old-fashioned corruption landed us here. The IMF deal isn’t a fun little hobby; it’s the only thing keeping us from total economic collapse. But Sajith, with all the wisdom of a man whose primary economic experience involves treasure hunting (literally), is outraged that AKD is sticking to the IMF’s fiscal discipline.

You’d think someone who claims to have a degree from the London School of Economics (LSE) would understand this. But then again, Sajith’s version of economics seems to involve his sister printing money while he embarks on Indiana Jones-style expeditions for hidden wealth. Maybe his real complaint is that AKD’s budget doesn’t include funding for his next adventure?

The Omelette of Wisdom

Sajith’s argument is essentially this: “Look, the budget is following IMF conditions!” Yes, genius, because that’s what happens when you take IMF loans. It’s like taking a bank loan and then being shocked that you have to make repayments. But instead of offering any meaningful alternative, Sajith stands on the sidelines, pointing at the obvious, hoping people mistake it for insight.

This is where his legendary analogy skills come in. Imagine a cook making an omelette. To make one, you need to break eggs. AKD is breaking the eggs—implementing tough financial decisions—to stabilize the economy. But here comes Sajith, gasping in horror, “Oh no, you broke the eggs according to the IMF plan!” Yes, Sajith, because that’s how you make an omelette. Would you prefer we keep the eggs unbroken and starve?

Open Mouth, Insert Foot

Every time Sajith speaks on economics, he reminds us that some people should just smile and wave. If he truly wanted to prove his economic credentials, he’d present an alternative budget, explain how he’d navigate the IMF deal differently, or at least suggest something remotely intelligent. Instead, he’s stuck in his usual loop—criticizing without comprehension, speaking without substance, and proving, once again, that a degree (real or otherwise) doesn’t guarantee wisdom.

So, dear Sajith, if you must comment on the budget, at least try to sound like someone who knows what he’s talking about. Otherwise, the only thing you’ll keep proving is that your greatest contribution to economics is comedy.
