SLPP’s Protest Outside US Embassy: The Joke of the Century

-By Our Political Satire Correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -16.Feb.2025, 7.45 PM) In what can only be described as the greatest political comedy show of our time, members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)—yes, the same party founded by Mahinda Rajapaksa—recently staged a loud, passionate, and deeply hypocritical protest outside the US Embassy in Colombo.

The reason? They were outraged—absolutely furious—over US aid money allegedly being given to various Sri Lankan individuals. The SLPP MPs, with red banners in hand and artificially angry expressions on their faces, screamed their lungs out about "foreign interference" and "Western influence corrupting Sri Lanka."

There was just one small problem—one minor detail they overlooked.

SLPP itself had received funding from US aid.

Yes, you read that right. The very same party protesting against US aid had been quietly pocketing US aid money all along.

SLPP: The Ultimate Hypocrisy Championship Winners

Imagine the scene: SLPP supporters marching to the US Embassy, chanting slogans, waving flags, and declaring their undying hatred for US interference. They put on a passionate performance, cameras rolling, reporters taking notes—until, of course, someone casually reminded them:

"Um, guys… didn’t our party receive US aid money too?"

Silence.

Confusion.

Panic.

The entire protest immediately lost its credibility, and within minutes, the SLPP leadership was scrambling for a way to spin this embarrassing revelation. Namal Rajapaksa, the party’s so-called "youth leader," was seen with the unmistakable look of a man who just realized he brought a knife to a gunfight.

The Secret Meeting with the US Ambassador

Now, a normal political party, upon realizing such a colossal blunder, would at least try to quietly disappear from the public eye. But not SLPP. Oh no. These geniuses decided to immediately switch strategies.

What did they do next?

After protesting against US aid money, they immediately invited US Ambassador Julie Chung to their headquarters for a "friendly discussion." Yes, within 48 hours of their anti-American protest, SLPP bigwigs were sipping tea and sharing biscuits with the very same American officials they were supposedly fighting against.

One SLPP insider revealed that during this "quiet" meeting, SLPP leaders desperately tried to explain themselves, saying:

"You see, Madam Ambassador, the protest outside was just for the villagers. You know how it is—we have to act patriotic for the cameras. But between us? We LOVE American aid money!"

Namal Rajapaksa: The King of Self-Goals

If hypocrisy had a face, it would be Namal Rajapaksa.

The SLPP MP and son of Mahinda Rajapaksa has always tried to brand himself as a modern, Western-educated leader who can "bridge the gap" between Sri Lanka and the international community. But every time he opens his mouth, he somehow manages to expose his own party’s hypocrisy even more.

During the US aid protest, Namal passionately declared:

"We don’t need American money! We will build Sri Lanka on our own!"

Yet, when US aid was quietly deposited into accounts linked to his party, he had no complaints whatsoever.

And let’s not forget:

  • Many SLPP leaders send their children to study in the US.

  • Several own property in the US.

  • Some even have US citizenship!

But of course, in front of the Sri Lankan public, they have to pretend they are ultra-patriotic, hardcore Sinhala-Buddhist nationalists.

The Real Purpose of the Protest: Sinhala Votes & Cheap Propaganda

So, if SLPP knew they were benefiting from US aid, why did they still stage this embarrassing protest?

Simple: Votes.

SLPP’s strategy has always been to fool the Sinhala-Buddhist voter base into believing they are "defending Sri Lanka from foreign influences." Never mind that their own families are chilling in the US, sipping Starbucks and shopping at Walmart—as long as the average voter in Hambantota thinks SLPP is "protecting the nation," their mission is accomplished.

SLPP’s Policies: A Party with No Direction

If you’re wondering what SLPP actually stands for, the answer is absolutely nothing. Their policies change depending on who is paying them and what benefits their leaders personally.

Consider this:

  • One day, they protest against US influence. The next day, they beg for US investment in Colombo’s Port City.

  • One day, they attack Western culture. The next day, they send their kids to Harvard.

  • One day, they talk about "protecting Sri Lankan women’s dignity." The next day, they are accused of taking sexual bribes in exchange for government jobs.

Yes, you heard that correctly. It has been widely reported that several top SLPP officials have been accused of accepting sexual favors in return for jobs and promotions in government positions.

This is the party that claims to defend Sri Lanka’s culture and values.

What Happens Next?

Now that their hypocrisy has been exposed, what will SLPP do?

Most likely, nothing.

They will continue fooling their supporters, making big speeches about patriotism, and pretending to hate Western nations—all while happily taking Western money behind closed doors.

Because at the end of the day, SLPP is not a real political party.

It is a third-class propaganda machine, designed only to protect the Rajapaksa family’s interests, while the rest of the country suffers.

Final Thoughts: SLPP’s Comedy Continues

If SLPP ever decides to quit politics, they should consider launching a reality TV show, because their level of absurdity is unmatched.

  • Protesting against US aid while taking US aid?

  • Pretending to be anti-American while hosting secret meetings with American diplomats?

  • Calling themselves patriotic while their own families live comfortably in the US?

The only real question left is: How much longer will the Sri Lankan public continue to fall for this circus?

Because if history has taught us anything, it’s that SLPP leaders are not patriots—they are just exceptionally talented actors in Sri Lanka’s never-ending political soap opera.
