(Lanka-e-News -11.Feb.2025, 10.30 PM) The Ministry of Justice had announced yesterday (10th) that the National People's Power (NPP) government will establish an independent prosecutor's office, following through on the proposal published by Lanka E News on the 7th titled "Is It Time to Set Up a Prosecution Service Inspectorate in Sri Lanka?" The full announcement is provided below.
In line with the “Prosperous Country, Beautiful Life” policy statement of the National People's Power, the Ministry of Justice and National Integration has decided to establish an independent prosecutor's office.
As an initial step, it is proposed to appoint an expert committee comprising the following members:
1. The Attorney General or two representatives appointed by the Attorney General
2. The Secretary of the Ministry of Justice
3. A senior judge with recognized expertise in the relevant field from the judiciary
4. The President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka or a representative appointed by the President
This committee will be responsible for the preliminary planning regarding the establishment of the proposed independent prosecutor's office.
Following the drafting of the initial concept paper, the Ministry of Justice and National Integration plans to gather feedback from the public and civil organizations.
