The decision by Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe to release three suspects in the assassination case of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge has drawn strong criticism from the media and civil rights activists, who accuse him of attempting to protect criminals.
On January 27, Attorney General Ranasinghe informed the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that legal action against the three main suspects in the case would not proceed.
According to reports, the individuals who may be released include former military intelligence officer Prem Anand Udalagama, former Officer-in-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Crimes Division, Inspector Tissasiri Sugathapala, and former Deputy Inspector General Prasanna Nanayakkara.
Human rights groups have accused Attorney General Ranasinghe of failing to ensure accountability and have demanded justice for Lasantha Wickrematunge, who was murdered on January 9, 2009.
In response, the Young Journalists’ Association has organized a protest scheduled for Thursday at 12:00 PM in front of the Attorney General’s Department.
Organizers are calling for the resignation of the Attorney General and demanding transparency regarding the order to release the suspects in Lasantha Wickrematunge’s murder case.
Meanwhile, during today's Cabinet media briefing, when journalists questioned Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa about the issue, he stated that the government is responsible for bringing criminals before the law. He further mentioned that the government will discuss the Attorney General’s actions and make a decision within a week.
At the media briefing, one journalist even referred to the Attorney General as "Nithi-Kathi" (a play on words implying bias in justice).
