(Lanka-e-News -17.Jan.2025, 10.15 PM) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed the Ministry of Defense to mobilize technical expertise and labor contributions from the tri-forces to enhance the necessary infrastructure for paddy procurement during the upcoming Maha season. This includes repairing storage facilities owned by the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) and Sathosa that are currently in disrepair.
A coordination meeting regarding this initiative was chaired yesterday (Jan 16) by Deputy Minister of Irrigation and Livestock, Namal Karunaratne, at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute in Colombo. During the meeting, attention was focused on utilizing the technical knowledge, labor, and machinery of the tri-forces to carry out repair work on these storage facilities.
Completing the repairs of storage facilities before the end of this month to prepare for Maha season paddy purchases.
Ensuring security for these storage premises post-procurement.
Incorporating this effort into the broader “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative as a significant step forward.
Sri Lanka has 209 storage facilities under the PMB and 12 under Sathosa. The meeting facilitated discussions among stakeholders about the current state of these warehouses, the necessary repairs, and future plans.
The event saw the participation of several key figures, including:
Manjula Pinnalanda, Chairman of the PMB.
Prof. E.L. Rajaguru, Chief Executive Officer of the PMB.
Regional managers of the PMB.
Major General Dinesh Udugama, Director General of Staff Operations, Sri Lanka Army.
Senior officers from the tri-forces and officials from the Ministry of Defense.
This collaborative effort demonstrates a significant step toward ensuring the smooth procurement of paddy during the Maha season and safeguarding food security in Sri Lanka.
