Dismissing claims from the opposition that the interim government lacks experienced members and that President Anura lacks international connections, he has secured the largest-ever foreign direct investment of $3.7 billion for Sri Lanka. During his four-day state visit to China, a landmark agreement was signed last morning (16th) between Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Energy and China’s Sinopec Corporation to build a new oil refinery in the Hambantota region.
This refinery, backed by Sinopec, a leading international petroleum company, will have the capacity to process 200,000 barrels of oil daily, with a significant portion intended for export. The $3.7 billion investment is expected to bolster the national economy and uplift the livelihoods of low-income communities in the Hambantota area. According to the President’s Media Division, the benefits of this initiative will soon extend to all Sri Lankans.
Prominent attendees included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, and Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Majintha Jayasinghe.
Coinciding with the third day of President Anura’s visit, he participated in an “Investment Session” today (16th) organized by China’s public and private sectors. He invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Sri Lanka, emphasizing the country’s stable governance and transparent economy.
Representatives from several leading Chinese corporations attended the session, including:

• China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group)
