(Lanka-e-News -09.Jan.2025, 11.50 PM) The Sri Lanka Telecom/Mobitel group, a key state-owned enterprise that was put up for complete sale during the previous Ranil Rajapaksa administration, has been taken off the path to privatization under the direct instructions of President Anura. The new Malima government has decided to retain a majority (51%) of its shares under state ownership and operate the company more efficiently. For this purpose, President Anura Kumara appointed Dr. Mothilal de Silva, a highly experienced and respected individual in the field, as the chairman.
However, this decision has caused great unrest among the directors representing Malaysia’s Maxis Group, which owns 49% of the shares in the group. Suren Amarasekara, one of these directors, has been actively using his influence over the 49% stake to obstruct the newly appointed chairman from making necessary changes to improve the institution’s efficiency.
During the Ranil Rajapaksa era, Suren Amarasekara’s primary agenda was reportedly to sell a majority (51%) of the Sri Lanka Telecom/Mobitel shares to Maxis, the company he represents, and secure the chairmanship of the group through deceitful means.
However, with the Malima government deciding not to sell the company, Amarasekara’s aspirations were dashed. He has since resorted to creating internal factions within the organization, significantly hindering the new chairman’s efforts to implement future plans. It is alleged that Amarasekara, who has considerable influence within the institution, even had the official office allocated to the new chairman demolished and converted into a meeting room before Dr. Mothilal took charge.
Suren Amarasekara’s past activities have reportedly been corrupt and unethical. He was previously employed by NCell, a subsidiary of Dialog Axiata in Nepal, where he was implicated in a large-scale corruption scandal and subsequently dismissed from the company. This disreputable history has tarnished his record. Additionally, evidence suggests that he has been involved in financial fraud through insurance contracts linked to the current Sri Lanka Telecom/Mobitel group.
The majority of employees within the Sri Lanka Telecom/Mobitel group believe that Suren Amarasekara, a disreputable director, has become a significant obstacle to the swift implementation of forward-looking plans under the new chairman, Dr. Mothilal de Silva, who was appointed by the President to lead the group in line with the new Malima government’s digital economy roadmap.
Lanka-e-News, known for its anti-corruption stance, issues a stern warning to Suren Amarasekara. His actions have not gone unnoticed, and his identity as a controversial figure has been brought to light, including his photograph for easy identification.
