Compensation from the Malima Government for Those Who Lost Vision Due to Faulty Medicines Provided During Keheliya’s Tenure! Legal Action Against Companies

(Lanka-e-News -08.Jan.2025, 5.15 PM) During Keheliya Rambukwella’s tenure, the use of faulty medicines led to several patients at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital losing their vision. The current Malima government has decided to compensate these affected patients.

A technical committee, headed by an Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health, was appointed to determine the compensation amounts for the victims who lost their sight following eye surgeries at the Nuwara Eliya hospital. After reviewing the case, the committee has presented its recommendations on the compensation to be paid.

The Cabinet has approved the following compensation payments to 17 affected patients:
    1.    LKR 1,000,000 each for 12 patients.
    2.    LKR 750,000 each for 2 patients.
    3.    LKR 700,000 for 1 patient.
    4.    LKR 250,000 each for 2 patients.

In addition to these compensation payments, the government has decided to provide continuous follow-up care for these patients.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has decided to initiate legal proceedings against the companies responsible for importing these faulty medicines.
