Diplomatic correspondent

(Lanka-e-News -01.Jan.2025, 11.30 PM) In a gesture of solidarity and friendship, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong visited Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province to distribute thousands of food packages to flood-affected families on 29th December. Valued at 16 million LKR, this humanitarian effort was conducted with the support of the Provincial Government and District Secretariats.

At the donation ceremony, Ambassador Qi delivered a heartfelt speech underscoring the deep-rooted bond between China and Sri Lanka.

“China and Sri Lanka share a friendship that spans over 2,000 years,” said Ambassador Qi. “Our approach to bilateral relations has always been inclusive, ensuring equal engagement with all communities and regions.”

Highlighting China’s unwavering support, Ambassador Qi recalled previous aid initiatives, including the provision of Sinopharm vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic and emergency humanitarian assistance worth 400 million LKR during prior flooding.

This year alone, China has donated 1.5 billion LKR worth of essential supplies to Sri Lanka's northern and eastern regions. These contributions included housing units, rice, and fishing nets to bolster livelihoods. In addition, 8 million LKR was donated last month to facilitate further development projects in the region.

Ambassador Qi reaffirmed China’s commitment to standing with Sri Lanka during challenging times.

“Today, we are here once again, extending our hand of friendship by providing 2,470 food packages to those affected by the floods,” he said. “We hope this support will help families rebuild their lives and return to normalcy.”

The visit and donation underscore China's continued partnership with Sri Lanka, reflecting a shared vision of resilience and cooperation.
