(Lanka-e-News -21.Dec.2024, 7.10 PM) The Chinese navy hospital ship "Peace Ark," currently on the Mission Harmony-2024, arrived at the Port of Colombo today (21). The ship will offer medical examinations and treatment services to the people of Sri Lanka from December 22 to 27.
Peace and development are the common wishes of people around the world. Guarding lives, maintaining people’s health, and spreading friendship, Ark Peace sets sail time and time again with the goodwill of peace. Upholding the spirit of the Red Cross, practicing the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind and a maritime community with shared future, she embraces the world with love and friendship, shouldering international responsibilities, showcasing China’s morality, and demonstrating the responsibility of a major country.
Ark Peace was commissioned in December 2008 with the hull number 866. The ship is 178 meters long, 24 meters wide and 35.5 meters high. She has eight levels of deck, displacing 14,300 tons when fully loaded.
Her duties are treating, caring, and evacuating casualties at sea; and giving medical treatments for the residents and stationed troops on China’s islands and reefs. It can also provide international humanitarian medical assistance, response to major disasters and emergencies, as well as undertake international exchanges and cooperation tasks on military medicine. Thus, it is reputed as the Ship of Life.
Ark Peace features the following five characteristics. She has strong medical capability at high seas. Ark Peace has outstanding seaworthiness and maneuverability. With 30 days endurance, Force 12 wind resistance, and 20 knots top speed, she can navigate and perform difficult surgeries at rough sea.
There are diversified casualty transport methods. With ten lifeboats and one air ambulance, Ark Peace can receive and evacuate the casualties by hanging baskets, side ports, alongside transfer gear, and the helicopter.
She has well-equipped medical facilities. The total area of the medical zone is 4,000㎡, with eight operation rooms and 226 beds. Ark Peace accommodates departments for diagnosis and treatment, including Severe Burn Wards, ICU, DR Room, CT Room, Dental Room, Special Examination Room, Blood Preparation Room, Laboratory, and Medical Information Center, etc., with up to 2,030 sets of medical devices of 250 different types.
She has advanced supporting systems. Based on the telemedicine consultation, medical LAN, CCTV systems, and advanced home-made medical devices such as ship-based surgical robot system and anesthesia robot, Ark Peace can carry out diagnosis, treatment, and surgery under real-time guidance from the central hospital at home.
She has strong medical force. Ark Peace has a wide range of clinical departments, such as Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatric, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Stomatology and Traditional Chinese Medicine. According to the needs of diverse missions, it can be staffed up with different specialists and nurses.
Benevolence is never bounded by territory.
Over the past 16 years, Ark Peace has carried out the Mission Harmony to provide medical service for ten times, visited more than 50 countries and regions, provided medical services to over 300,000 people, and performed more than 1,600 surgeries, thus left a shining image reflecting China’s Red Cross Spirit across three oceans and six continents. Whether in the continent of Africa, the islands of the South Pacific, or the regions of Latin America, regardless of the size of the country or the wealth of its people, Ark Peace has sincerely depicted the chapter of mutual assistance and shared joys and sorrows with true compassion. This has earned her great respect and sincere trust from the people of the visited countries.
On June 16, 2024, under the command of Rear Admiral Ying Hongbo and Rear Admiral He Yongming, Ark Peace set sail from Zhoushan of China once again, heading to countries including Seychelles, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Angola, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Benin, Mauritania, Algeria, Djibouti, Sri Lanka and Singapore to carry out the Mission Harmony-2024.
The Ark Peace hospital consists of 106 medical personnel and more than 70% of them are from the PLA Navy Medical University which is widely renowned in China. Among them, 74% are mid-to-senior-level professionals in specialized technical positions, 39% have graduate degrees, and 67% of personnel have carried out major medical operations.
The Ark Peace hospital has a total of 17 clinical departments and five auxiliary departments. It can perform over 60 types of surgeries, examinations and treatments including general surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, and otolaryngology. The main platform can accommodate 600 to 700 outpatient visits daily and conduct physical examinations for 30 individuals.
