(Lanka-e-News -21.Nov.2024,11.00 pm) The 10th Parliament commenced today, and Dr. Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala was unanimously elected as the new Speaker. His name was proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Vijitha Herath. Dr. Ranwala, who holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Moratuwa and a PhD in Biochemistry from a Japanese university, previously represented the Western Provincial Council on behalf of the NPP. In the recent election, he was elected to Parliament representing the Gampaha District with over 100,000 preferential votes.
Subsequently, Dr. Mohamed Rizvi Sally, an NPP MP, was appointed Deputy Speaker. His name was proposed by Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and seconded by Minister Saroja Paulraj.
Furthermore, NPP MP Hemamali Weerasekara was appointed Deputy Chairperson of Committees. Representing the Gampaha District, she contested under the NPP. Her name was proposed for this position by Minister Sunil Sannunhetty and seconded by MP Samanmali Gunasinghe.
Sajith Premadasa was elected as the Leader of the Opposition by the opposition MPs. However, the Chief Opposition Whip has not yet been appointed.
Later this evening, at the Presidential Secretariat, the second tier of the NPP government, comprising Deputy Ministers, was sworn in before President Anura. The total number of Deputy Ministers sworn in is 29. Their names and positions are as follows:
