(Lanka-e-News -19.Nov.2024,11.00 pm) The election results symbolize the liberation of an oppressed people, highlighting their desire for freedom. The resounding victory of the National People's Power also brings a weighty responsibility, equal to the magnitude of this achievement, stated President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He made these remarks while addressing the newly appointed ministers after the swearing-in of the new Cabinet.
"The election on September 21 marked a critical turning point in Sri Lankan politics. It signified a decisive departure from the old paths the country had long followed. Through their decision on that day, the people sought a new direction, which was reaffirmed in the subsequent parliamentary election. By doing so, the people of this country placed immense trust in us," the President remarked.
This election also demonstrated the enthusiasm and commitment of the Sri Lankan populace, who collectively rejected divisive politics. Historically, the political landscape in Sri Lanka was often marked by the polarization of the North against the South and vice versa. However, the results of this election clearly indicate that such politics of division are no longer relevant. The aspirations of people from the North, South, East, and West have converged into a unified vision.
The President expressed gratitude to all voters, including those who supported other political movements, emphasizing that the overarching goals and ideals sought by the National People's Power resonate broadly across the nation. He added, "No citizen of Sri Lanka truly believes in divisive politics anymore, nor do they wish to see the erosion of democracy."
"This election has ushered in a new political culture, one that does not seek to humiliate or oppress those on the losing side. Instead, we have upheld the spirit of unity and democratic integrity even after our victory," President Anura noted.
"The election results represent an invitation to freedom for those who have been oppressed. People needed this freedom to escape the manifold burdens they faced—economic hardships, social inequalities, professional frustrations, and cultural discrimination. This victory is not a license to create divisions but an opportunity to ensure liberty across all sectors."
The President stressed the need to safeguard the democratic rights of all citizens, regardless of their professions, beliefs, or backgrounds. "Freedom to practice one’s profession with dignity, to live in harmony with one's culture and language, and to enjoy economic justice must be guaranteed," he said.
Highlighting the support of Sri Lankans overseas, President Anura acknowledged their significant contribution to the electoral process, remarking on their enthusiasm and active participation. "This was not merely a victory for our movement but for all Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad," he said.
The President also expressed gratitude to the volunteers and supporters who worked tirelessly to bring about this victory, some of whom have dedicated decades to this cause. "Even those who parted ways with us along the journey played a role in making this victory possible," he added.
President Anura concluded by emphasizing the need for humility in power, stating, "Power is unique—it can create, expand, and reinforce itself. However, unchecked power can also corrupt. We must remember this and ensure that the authority vested in us is exercised responsibly, for the benefit of all Sri Lankans."
This election, he declared, is a historic opportunity to usher Sri Lanka into a new era of progress and justice, built on the foundations of collective freedom and democratic integrity.
