(Lanka-e-News -17.Nov.2024,11.00 pm) In the recently concluded presidential and parliamentary elections, Anura Kumara Dissanayake secured a resounding victory for the National People’s Power (NPP), gaining the overwhelming support of Sri Lankan citizens. For the first time in 76 years, Sri Lankans achieved a monumental victory by defeating the dominant and corrupt political parties and figures that have long controlled the nation’s political landscape.
What makes this triumph even more remarkable is that it marked a historic election that united the divided North and South. This victory is not just a political milestone but a testament to the unity of Sri Lankans as one nation. It signifies the beginning of a new chapter for building the future Sri Lankan state and achieving national reconciliation. The ability of Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the NPP to bridge the gap between the divided North and South is a victory for Sri Lanka both domestically and internationally.
For decades, political leaders prioritized narrow, self-serving ambitions, exploiting ethnic, religious, and linguistic differences to consolidate power. Southern politicians incited hatred among Southerners towards the Northern and Eastern communities, while Northern and Eastern leaders reciprocated by fostering resentment against Southerners.
This prolonged discord between communities plunged the nation into extreme poverty and tarnished Sri Lanka’s reputation on the global stage. However, the 2024 general election achieved what seemed impossible: uniting the long-divided people of the North and South under a common national identity. This unity is the most significant triumph of this election and must not be undermined by conspiratorial or divisive political forces. Ensuring this unity remains intact is a responsibility shared by all Sri Lankan citizens.
The country has suffered greatly due to decades of shortsighted decisions by successive governments. Citizens have been driven from one crisis to another, left without basic needs, and forced into unbearable living conditions. In this context, the responsibility of rebuilding and uplifting Sri Lanka falls squarely on the shoulders of the new government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The new administration must bring together all communities to rebuild the nation and address the challenges posed by years of mismanagement. Systematic improvements should lead to prosperity and better living conditions for the people, fostering hope for a brighter future.
The overwhelming mandate given by the people should not lead to arrogance but instead be used wisely to ensure competent governance. The new leadership must rely on qualified individuals and implement sound policies for economic stabilization and public welfare. President Anura and his government, along with the elected representatives in Parliament, must fulfill the aspirations of the people by addressing their concerns and working diligently to create a prosperous nation.
As Sri Lanka embarks on this new journey, all citizens must unite to protect this hard-won victory and ensure the country never returns to the divisive politics of the past. Only through collective effort and wise leadership can Sri Lanka achieve its potential as a unified, prosperous, and respected nation on the global stage.
