(Lanka-e-News -10.Nov.2024, 11.45 pm) In the grand theater of Sri Lankan politics, there’s always a lawyer, dressed to the nines, ready to speak about “the people,” “democracy,” and the supposed dangers of letting any party get too much power. This time, it’s a prominent lawyer, once deep in the corridors of the UNP who’s now frantically warning against the NPP getting a two-thirds majority. “For democracy!” he cries, “Don’t give them too much power!” The irony here is so thick, you could cut it with a dull butter knife.
This man was no stranger to a two-thirds majority himself. Remember the UNP days? Back then, they wielded their overwhelming power to bring in some of the most restrictive laws. Our dear lawyer was right there, part of the gang. He was a provincial council member, too, and fully supportive until things got a little too dicey for him. But now, suddenly, he’s Sri Lanka’s self-appointed protector of democracy. The timing couldn’t be better—or worse, depending on how you see it.
Ah, but wait! That was only Act One. When he grew tired of Ranil’s leadership in the UNP, he valiantly tried to introduce Karu Jayasuriya as the new leader. Ranil, of course, wasn’t too pleased with this mutiny, and he swiftly showed our lawyer the exit door. Banished but undeterred, he moved on to support Sajith Premadasa, because switching allegiances seems to be his favorite hobby.
Today, he has a new party and a new cause, but the same old act. Here he is, just before a crucial election, practically pleading with the public: “Please, don’t give NPP a majority. Think of democracy!” But if democracy were really his cause, he’d be doing something a bit more meaningful. Drafting an alternative constitution perhaps, or actually presenting ideas on how to safeguard democratic rights. But that would involve some real work, wouldn’t it?
Instead, we get a lawyer on his last crusade, waving his arms, warning us of the supposed doom that awaits if the NPP wins a majority. Is this really about democracy? Or is it just the dying embers of a career, a final performance to remind us all he’s still here? So, here we are, with Sri Lanka’s leading lawyer-turned-comedian giving us yet another memorable act. Grab the popcorn, everyone—it’s going to be quite the show.
