Ambassador Qi Zhenhong delivered remarks at the event, emphasizing the importance of educational exchange as a foundation for the long-standing China-Sri Lanka friendship.
Ambassador Qi warmly welcomed the guests, including Hon. Mahinda Siriwardena and representatives from Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Finance. He expressed gratitude to the Department of External Resources for supporting China’s foreign aid initiatives and congratulated the alumni for their commitment to advancing their respective fields.
Referring to a well-known Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” Ambassador Qi highlighted the philosophy behind China’s foreign aid training, which aligns with President Xi Jinping’s global development initiatives. Since its inception in 1950, China Aid training programs have reached over 510,000 participants from developing countries, contributing to knowledge-sharing and global development.
Ambassador Qi also noted that the Chinese government has long supported educational partnerships with Sri Lanka, with nearly 13,000 Sri Lankans participating in training seminars in China across diverse fields such as public management, technology, health, and agriculture. This year alone, more than 1,000 Sri Lankans have taken part in programs covering 17 key sectors, furthering both professional growth and the bonds of friendship between the two nations.
The Ambassador emphasized that China remains committed to talent cultivation, science, and innovation, following President Xi’s vision of these as essential drivers of progress. He pledged that China will continue to support the “Global South” through targeted educational programs tailored to the needs of developing countries, including Sri Lanka.
Looking forward, Ambassador Qi reaffirmed China’s commitment to enhancing its training programs in response to Sri Lanka’s evolving development priorities. He extended warm wishes to the guests and expressed hope for the enduring friendship between China and Sri Lanka.
The event served as a platform to celebrate the shared achievements of China Aid training alumni and reaffirmed the commitment to collaboration, with both nations looking ahead to deeper cooperation in 2024 and beyond.
