(Lanka-e-News -23.Oct.2024, 10.50 pm) According to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi ideology, the traditional German woman was essentially a machine designed to produce ideal Aryan children for Germany. Hitler stated, “German women have their own battlefield. With every child they bring into the world, they begin a fight for their nation.” For the traditional German woman, smoking, dieting, and beauty treatments were banned as these were seen as “un-German” activities.
Hitler’s Nazi vision aimed for maximum output from these childbearing machines, with attractive incentives offered. Newlyweds were provided with a “marriage loan,” ten times the average monthly German wage at the time. For each child born, 25% of this loan would be forgiven, meaning by the time a family had four children, the loan would be entirely canceled. Women who had the most children were awarded the “Motherhood Cross” in line with the Iron Cross given to soldiers, and these families received special privileges like government housing and welfare.
Hitler’s Nazi policy toward women was that their primary role was to serve men’s needs both at home and in society. Women were encouraged to become housewives, rather than professionals, and barred from holding jobs as judges, lawyers, or school principals by 1936. By 1939, women’s access to higher education was severely limited, with university quotas set at a maximum of 10% female students.
Though Hitler’s Nazi regime was defeated, fascist and Nazi ideologies weren’t entirely eradicated. In Sri Lanka, presidential candidate Dilith Jayaweera’s recent critique of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya reflects the same traditional, patriarchal ideals. Jayaweera stated that Harini Amarasuriya, as an unmarried woman without children, did not represent a traditional Sri Lankan woman and thus could not be trusted to uphold cultural values. This rhetoric is a clear manifestation of a Nazi-Fascist political perspective that links women’s worth to their marital and reproductive status.
According to Jayaweera, Amarasuriya is not a traditional Sri Lankan woman because she is unmarried and childless. For fascists like him, women are seen as instruments for marriage and childbearing. Personal choices, such as marriage or having children, should be respected in a democratic society, but for right-wing fascists, these choices are judged and condemned. Dilith Jayaweera embodies an extreme right-wing fascist Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist, attacking personal choices to further his political agenda.
Jayaweera’s media network also plays a key role in spreading reactionary, anti-woman ideologies. His channel “Nai-Derana” recently insulted a famous Sri Lankan opera singer, and no disciplinary action was taken against the anchor. This blatant disregard for women’s dignity is consistent with Jayaweera’s larger misogynistic agenda.
Dilith Jayaweera, aiming to capture the Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist flag previously held by the Rajapaksas, seeks to destroy the social democratic path of the National People’s Power. To achieve this, he sees politically destroying the widely respected Harini Amarasuriya as essential.
We see fascist and Nazi ideologies spreading worldwide. In Austria, the Freedom Party, which has Nazi roots, won recent elections. In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has made gains, and in France, Marine Le Pen’s National Front is poised for success in the next presidential election. In all these movements, we witness similar attacks on women, like those made by Dilith Jayaweera.
There is also the risk of right-wing fascism rising in America, where figures like Donald Trump and J.D. Vance propagate nationalist, racist ideologies. Should Trump win in November, it could lead to a resurgence of far-right ideologies across the globe, similar to those championed by Dilith Jayaweera.
As if adding more garbage to the pile, Trump selected J.D. Vance, a notorious right-wing racist and sexist political figure, as his vice-presidential candidate. Trump is anti-women— a widely known figure convicted in court for sexual misconduct. J.D. Vance, his VP pick, has long accused childless and unmarried women of being a threat to the American family culture.
Vance has referred to such women derogatorily as “childless cat ladies,” mocking women without children and those who are unmarried. He even suggested that childless teachers should be disqualified from service. Vance further argued that childless and unmarried Democratic representatives (both men and women) should not be allowed to make decisions about America’s future. In a country like the U.S., where personal choice is highly respected, it is rare to see figures who disrespect women in such a way. But from a fascist demagogue like Trump, no one can expect a progressive culture.
Dilith Jayaweera’s criticism against Harini and Sri Lankan women was not an accident; it reflects the global trend of right-wing neo-Nazi fascist politics. Dilith Jayaweera represents this brand of fascism in Sri Lanka. He has amassed all the necessary components—right-wing Sinhala Buddhist nationalist politics, financial power, and media influence. He has now created a fascist, racist front called “Sarva Jana Balaya,” which includes hardline Sinhala Buddhist nationalists like Udaya Gammanpila, Sarath Weerasekara, and Anuradha Yahampath.
Dilith’s first political attack targeted Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, aiming to undermine her. The second attack has now been launched by Udaya Gammanpila, targeting the Easter Sunday attack investigation, which is one of the key electoral promises of the National People’s Power (NPP) government. Gammanpila’s aim is to shield Gotabaya Rajapaksa from any accountability for the Easter attacks through two reports commissioned by the eighth president, Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Sabotaging the Easter Sunday investigation is crucial for Gotabaya and the deep state figures who planned the attack. Gammanpila and Dilith’s “Sarva Jana Balaya” stand in defense of these forces. They have also started accusing the NPP government of presenting proposals that would destroy Sinhala Buddhist unity and rights.
Following Gammanpila’s Easter attack report drama, the second part of “Ranaviru Dadayama” (the Hunt for War Heroes) is set to be unveiled. Reports indicate that a group of ordained monks trained in Medamulana are preparing for it. Gammanpila, who has been accused of presenting fake witnesses in a case involving the abduction and murder of 11 innocent children for ransom, treats such incidents as mere “trivialities.”
Dilith Jayaweera and his fascist front pose a significant challenge to Sri Lanka’s democratic system. The involvement of deep state forces behind them only makes the situation more dangerous. This racist, fascist front is a deadly threat to social democrats, leftists, liberals, and the broader democracy of the country. To defeat this fascist front led by Dilith, Gammanpila, and their deep state backers, a strong mandate must be given to the NPP in the upcoming general election. There is no other alternative at this moment.
