(Lanka-e-News -16.Oct.2024, 8.45 pm) Dr. Ajith Amarasinghe, the chairman of the United Republican Front, led by Champika Ranawaka, has resigned from both the chairmanship and membership of the party. Amarasinghe played a significant role in transforming the 43 Group into a political party and building the United Republican Front.
He made this decision in opposition to the political board’s choice, which included Champika Ranawaka, to leave the Samagi Jana Balawegaya coalition ahead of the upcoming general election. Amarasinghe submitted his resignation on October 10, addressing it to the party’s secretary, Bandula Chandrasekara.
This resignation has thrown the United Republican Front into a severe political crisis. Meanwhile, the party’s national organizer, Engineer Sumedha Ratnayake, is contesting in the Gampaha District with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Former MP Karunaratne Paranawithana, who filed a nomination for the Ratnapura District, has stated that he will not actively seek votes, expressing that he has been politically sidelined.
Supporters of Paranawithana believe that he had a solid chance of being elected to parliament from the Ratnapura District in this election.
In the meantime, Sajith Premadasa, leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, who was once publicly criticized by Champika as “Lama Kating Ting,” has now received Champika’s support in the presidential election. Champika’s reversal led some to criticize him, but he convinced the party’s central committee to back his decision. However, Champika later made a unilateral decision to withdraw from the coalition and the election without informing the central committee.
Independent political commentators have remarked that although Champika is a skilled mathematician, Sajith, in the presidential election, used him to serve his own purposes and later discarded him. Despite this, it is widely believed that Champika’s opportunistic nationalist politics have come to an end.
