Former Excise Commissioner Gunasiri Preparing to Flee the Country? A Petition Filed Against Him and His Team in Court..!

-By a Special Reporter

(Lanka-e-News -09.Oct.2024, 4.45 pm)  A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court, requesting a travel ban against former Excise Commissioner General M.J. Gunasiri and a group of officials, citing information that they are planning to leave the country. Gunasiri and the others are currently facing a contempt of court case.

The petition was filed by Gihan Shawinda Fernando, a resident of Nittambuwa, and names several officials as respondents, including former Excise Commissioner General M.J. Gunasiri, Additional Directors General A.M.P. Arampath, and Deputy Excise Commissioners K. Dharmaseelan and C.J.A. Virakkody.

The petition arises from allegations that Gunasiri and the other respondents have committed contempt of court by ignoring an interim injunction issued by the Supreme Court, which prohibited the issuance of new liquor licenses. The petition also calls for appropriate punishment following a trial.

According to the petitioner, there is credible information that the respondents are preparing to leave the country to evade legal proceedings related to the contempt of court case. The petitioner further argues that if the respondents flee, it would cause a great injustice to the ongoing legal process. Therefore, the petitioner requests the court to issue an order preventing the respondents from traveling abroad.
