(Lanka-e-News -09.Oct.2024, 4.30 pm) The new government has decided to immediately terminate the services of the corrupt former Excise Commissioner General M.J. Gunasiri, following multiple exposés by Lanka E News.
Under Gunasiri’s leadership, the Excise Department, a key institution responsible for collecting government revenue, failed to fulfill its duties properly. Huge amounts of tax revenue were misappropriated, with liquor tax fraud running rampant. There was also significant corruption in the printing of stickers. Gunasiri, who had surpassed the retirement age, was serving as Excise Commissioner General on a contract basis.
The decision to remove him was made by the Cabinet, following a proposal presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is also the Finance Minister. U.D.N. Jayawira, currently serving as the President’s Additional Secretary (Institutional Coordination 2), has been appointed to oversee the duties of the Excise Commissioner General.
