Calls to Recover Housing Ministry Funds Used for Sajith Premadasa’s Education..!

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -06.Oct.2024, 5.45 pm) Recent investigative reports have revealed that the educational expenses of Sajith Premadasa, current leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and son of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, were allegedly paid using funds illegally diverted from Sri Lanka’s Housing Ministry. These funds reportedly covered his high school education at Millwall College and his university education in the UK, raising concerns about the misuse of public resources.

The investigations show that the money used to finance Sajith’s education was transferred from Housing Ministry accounts without cabinet approval or government authorization, a clear violation of financial regulations. The funds in question were originally intended for housing projects and other initiatives benefiting Sri Lankan taxpayers, but were allegedly rerouted to cover Sajith’s tuition fees, accommodation, extracurricular activities, and travel expenses, amounting to nearly $2 million.

Various activists and anti-corruption organizations are now calling for Sajith Premadasa to repay the money. They argue that taxpayers’ funds, which should have been allocated to housing development, were instead used for personal gain. The misuse of these public funds has sparked outrage, with demands for accountability and transparency.

Sajith Premadasa, who has positioned himself as a champion of anti-corruption, is now under pressure to address these allegations. Critics argue that if he benefited from illegally diverted funds, he must take responsibility and reimburse the Sri Lankan government. The total amount in question, including interest, is estimated to be between $500,000 and $790,000, with additional expenses pushing the total closer to $2 million.

With growing scrutiny, activists are calling for an official inquiry into the matter, insisting that the misappropriated funds be recovered in full. Many see this as a test of Premadasa’s commitment to fighting corruption, as he faces accusations of benefiting from the very practices he claims to oppose.

As the public awaits his response, Sajith Premadasa’s political future may hinge on how he handles these serious allegations. If proven true, this scandal could tarnish his image as a reformer and cast a shadow over his leadership.
