Erik Solheim’s Role in Sri Lanka: Climate Change Advisor or Controversial Diplomat..?

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -05.Oct.2024, 5.40 pm) Erik Solheim, the former climate change advisor to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, finds himself at the center of scrutiny as questions arise about his contributions to the island’s battle against climate change. While considerable funds were reportedly spent to facilitate Solheim’s advisory role, critics are now questioning whether he has delivered on his promises to protect Sri Lanka from the effects of climate change. Moreover, his controversial past as a negotiator between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers during the country’s civil conflict continues to cast a shadow over his current position.

Solheim, a Norwegian diplomat, gained notoriety for his role in mediating the peace negotiations between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). However, the negotiations ultimately collapsed, leading to a bloody final phase of the war, which saw the deaths of thousands of civilians. Many hold Solheim partially responsible for the failure of these talks and the subsequent loss of life. Despite these accusations, Solheim transitioned from diplomacy to climate advocacy, assuming the role of climate change advisor to Sri Lanka in recent years.

Critics argue that Solheim’s expertise in climate change is questionable and that there is little evidence to suggest he has implemented significant initiatives or campaigns to protect Sri Lanka from climate-related threats. Despite being tasked with helping Sri Lanka combat rising sea levels, extreme weather, and environmental degradation, there appears to be no substantial record of his contributions in this arena. This has led to growing frustration among taxpayers, who are demanding accountability for the funds spent on Solheim’s tenure.

There are also rumors of extravagant expenses during Solheim’s time in Sri Lanka, including alleged helicopter rides and stays on Kawan Ratnayake ‘s private Island in Weligama. These claims, if proven true, could further damage his reputation and raise concerns about the misuse of taxpayer money.

Adding to the controversy, Solheim recently praised current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for his diplomatic efforts, which some interpret as a veiled criticism of Ranil Wickremesinghe, the very leader who appointed him as climate change advisor. This has sparked a political conflict, with some accusing Solheim of undermining Wickremesinghe’s legacy and credibility as a diplomat.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is home to numerous qualified academics and researchers who have dedicated their careers to studying and combating climate change. Critics argue that these individuals, many of whom have published scientific research on the issue, should have been given priority over an international figure like Solheim, who lacks a track record in the field.

Beyond his climate advisory role, there are renewed calls for transparency regarding Solheim’s involvement in the peace negotiations with the LTTE. Allegations that the talks were not conducted properly, potentially contributing to the tragic loss of life, have resurfaced. Some are urging the international community to hold Solheim accountable by disclosing all relevant documents and evidence related to these negotiations.

As these questions continue to swirl, Erik Solheim’s legacy in Sri Lanka remains a subject of debate. He must now address the concerns of the Sri Lankan public, both regarding his effectiveness as a climate change advisor and his past as a peace negotiator. Without clear answers, the pressure on the government to take legal action and recover taxpayer funds may only intensify.
