Tamils in Northern Sri Lanka to Protest Against Indian Foreign Minister Jai Shankar's Visit Over Katchathevu Remarks..!

(Lanka-e-News -29.Sep.2024, 11.45 pm)  Tensions are rising in Sri Lanka ahead of Indian Foreign Minister Jai Shankar's scheduled visit to Colombo, as Tamil political groups from the northern region have announced protests in response to his recent comments regarding the disputed Katchathevu Island.

Jai Shankar, who is set to meet the newly elected Sri Lankan President, Anura Kumara, sparked outrage after repeatedly stating during India’s recent elections that India must reclaim Katchathevu Island from Sri Lanka, either through diplomatic means or military action. This island, handed over to Sri Lanka by a bilateral treaty in 1974, has been a point of contention between the two countries.

Despite issuing a public apology, Tamil political leaders are demanding that Jai Shankar formally withdraw his comments and respect Sri Lankan sovereignty. "The Indian Foreign Minister must understand that he cannot interfere in Sri Lanka’s internal matters, especially in sensitive times like elections," said a prominent Tamil politician.

Tamils in the northern province, many of whom share close ethnic ties with Tamil Nadu in India, have expressed their dismay, stating they feel betrayed by Jai Shankar, a Tamilian himself. "He should apologize, not just for his remarks but for repeatedly promising something unrealistic," said one protest leader.

Jai Shankar's statements have also drawn the attention of China, a longstanding ally of Sri Lanka. Chinese officials have warned that any attempt to violate Sri Lanka’s sovereignty would be met with a "firm response," signaling Beijing’s readiness to intervene if necessary.

As Tamil groups prepare to protest during Jai Shankar's visit, tensions are expected to escalate, especially in Colombo, where demonstrators aim to showcase their anger.

With regional politics heating up, the coming days will test the delicate balance of Indo-Sri Lankan relations, as the issue of Katchathevu Island continues to loom over diplomatic efforts.
