(Lanka-e-News -25.Sep.2024, 11.15 pm) It goes without saying that a Secretary of Defense is responsible for national security, accountable to the Commander-in-Chief, the sitting government, and the people.
Kamal Gune, however, neglected this critical role, engaging in unrelated activities such as publishing poetry books and inaugurating messages, while ignoring the pressing needs of national security. His actions, from engraving his name on the Sadahiru Seya monument to misusing public funds for personal luxuries, are not forgotten by the public. People still remember how he illegally deployed commandos for his personal use and paraded dogs in front of a large crowd at the Torrington roundabout.
Kamal Gune, without prior notice or approval, jeopardized national security by abandoning his post just two days before the new president was sworn in. This constitutes a serious dereliction of duty, for which he should be legally punished.
Just as Gune once removed military officers from service for arriving an hour late, he himself has committed a grave offense by abandoning his duties without warning. He knows full well the weight of his wrongdoing.
Kamal Gune, who followed Piyumi's money-laundering scheme, published a poetry book titled "Rajaali Sandeshaya," priced at Rs. 10,000. Though he failed to sell even 50 copies, he falsely claims to have printed and sold 50,000, using fake documents to deceive the law.
Today, luxury furniture that had been hidden at the Ministry of Defense was discovered. Army Commander Vikum has since moved the items to the Army Headquarters and registered them. It has been confirmed that these items were intended for Gunarathna’s mansion in Pannipitiya, raising questions about the delay in legal action.
Now is the time for the newly elected president and Commander-in-Chief, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to ensure justice for the thousands of oppressed military members who supported his victory. These members, who suffered under Kamal Gune’s corrupt leadership, deserve a presidential commission to address their grievances.
Before the presidential election, Gune fled the Ministry of Defense, hiding until now. As an illegally promoted general, he retaliated against thousands of military personnel. A commission should be swiftly established to investigate this and hold those responsible accountable before the parliamentary election.
Kamal Gune and Army Commander Vikum not only engaged in illegal retaliation but also accumulated illicit wealth. All illegal activities and misuse of state resources by them should be investigated by the commission, with opportunities for anyone to present evidence.
Brigadier Anil Somawira, who upheld Sri Lanka’s dignity without firing a single shot during the Aragalaya protest, has now been sidelined to a remote camp in Mullaitivu by Kamal and Vikum. In contrast, Major General Dinesh Nanayakkara, who illegally ordered soldiers to fire on protesters, has already been positioned as the second-in-command with plans for him to be appointed as the Army Commander.
Dinesh, originally a Catholic, even rejected the presidency of the Army’s Catholic Association to advance his ambitions of becoming the Army Commander, portraying himself as a Buddhist.
Expect more shocking revelations about these individuals in the coming days.
