(Lanka-e-News -25.Sep.2024, 11.00 pm) The Supreme Court today ordered the remand of Immigration and Emigration Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya until the conclusion of the trial on charges of contempt of court.

The charges were brought against Ilukpitiya for failing to comply with an order to enforce a Cabinet decision that suspended the approval process for visas and operations conducted through the internet in Sri Lanka and abroad. The Supreme Court issued a charge sheet today, accusing Ilukpitiya of contempt of court, which was read out during the session. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Supreme Court emphasized that it would not remain silent when orders from the highest institution of law are not implemented. The court then ordered Ilukpitiya to be remanded until the trial's conclusion.

The three-judge bench consisting of Justices Priyantha Padman Surasena, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Achala Wengappuli scheduled the next hearing for January 22.
