(Lanka-e-News -14.Sep.2024, 11.45 pm) It has been reported to Lanka-e-News that ambassadors from powerful foreign countries have warned President Ranil Wickremesinghe that if he engages in any conspiratorial actions to disrupt a peaceful transition of power during the upcoming presidential election, he may face a travel ban or legal restrictions preventing him from entering their countries.

All surveys have confirmed the victory of Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the candidate from the National People's Power (NPP), in the upcoming election. However, concerns have been raised that the current president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, may attempt to sabotage the peaceful transfer of power.

Anura Kumara has publicly stated on many occasions that within 24 hours of being sworn in as president, he plans to form an interim cabinet and then dissolve the Parliament, paving the way for a new parliamentary election. He has explained three constitutional pathways for forming an interim government, even though his party currently holds only three parliamentary seats.

One possible disruptive action Ranil may take is dissolving Parliament on the 20th, just before the 21st when the election is set to take place, thereby complicating Anura’s ability to form a caretaker government once he assumes the presidency.

During the Satana television program aired today, Anura responded to a question regarding this, stating that if Ranil dissolves Parliament, he can still gazette 25 cabinet ministries and appoint secretaries for each, thereby placing all 25 ministries under the authority of the president until the next parliamentary election. Anura added that this period would likely last for 53 days.

Ambassadors from powerful nations have issued warnings to Ranil regarding the imposition of a travel ban should he carry out any disruptive actions. They have further cautioned him not to take any steps that would diminish his opportunities for diplomatic intervention, especially if Anura's new government decides to exert pressure on Ranil in the future.
