(Lanka-e-News -14.Sep.2024, 11.00 pm) In recent developments, a Maldivian national, Fathmath Nuha Haroon, has been accused of spreading false allegations of domestic violence against her Sri Lankan ex-husband, causing significant diplomatic tensions between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Several Sri Lankan organizations have raised concerns over the alleged discrediting of Sri Lankan men and the negative impact on the country’s image, following Nuha’s  media appearances in the Maldives where she reportedly made the accusations.

These allegations have reportedly led to anti-immigration sentiments against Sri Lankans in the Maldives, with many Sri Lankan men who are married to Maldivian nationals now facing difficulties in traveling freely to the Maldives. According to reports, several have been issued travel bans based on the fabricated domestic violence claims.

The controversy has escalated due to the involvement of Maldivian Immigration Director Shaman, who has been accused of playing a key role in advancing the false narrative. This has fueled further tensions, as it is believed that these actions were part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of Sri Lankan men.

What began as a personal legal dispute between Nuha  and her ex-husband has now evolved into a diplomatic issue, affecting broader relations between the two nations. Sri Lankan advocacy groups are urging the Maldivian government to investigate the alleged misuse of power by officials, including Immigration Director Shaman, and to address the harm caused to Sri Lankan nationals.

Adding to the complexity of the situation,Nuha ‘s  mother is reportedly married to a Sri Lankan Catholic, further highlighting the personal and familial connections entangled in the controversy. Moreover,Nuha Mother  is currently reported to be with a Pakistani national, further complicating the narrative, who might funding the negative publicity for Sri Lankan men residing in the Maldives.

This case has raised serious concerns about the exploitation of personal legal matters to advance anti-immigration rhetoric, with Sri Lankans calling for accountability and action from the Maldivian government to resolve the situation and restore fair treatment for Sri Lankan nationals visiting or residing in the Maldives.
