(Lanka-e-News -08.Sep.2024, 11.00 pm) Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the National People's Power (NPP) party, has emerged as a strong contender in Sri Lanka’s upcoming election. His campaign focuses on addressing the country's pressing economic and social issues. Dissanayake has highlighted concerns such as low tax revenues, high government expenditure, and rampant corruption. He pointed out that the low salaries of public servants and private-sector employees contribute to inefficiency and corruption, emphasizing the need to modernize the civil service.
Dissanayake proposed that the civil service be provided with more resources and investments to improve productivity, rather than simply blaming public servants for inefficiencies. His party, NPP, has demonstrated its ability to turn around loss-making businesses, as evidenced by their successful management of cooperative enterprises. Dissanayake pledged to reform key sectors such as transportation, energy, and state-owned enterprises, with a particular focus on state enterprises like Sathosa.
In addition to economic reforms, the NPP leader is committed to modernizing the education sector and ensuring it meets the needs of the 21st century. He advocates for increased investment rather than cutbacks in education. Similarly, the NPP plans to revamp the national healthcare system to provide accessible services for all citizens.
One of Dissanayake’s major concerns is the growing problem of illicit drugs in Sri Lanka. He revealed that over 800,000 Sri Lankans are addicted to drugs, and the country has become a hub for international drug smuggling. The NPP has vowed to tackle this issue, as well as human trafficking, to ensure the safety of the nation.
The NPP also recognizes the importance of creating a competitive business environment. Dissanayake has committed to reducing red tape and limiting political control over business approvals and licenses. While some political opponents, such as the leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), have proposed withdrawing from the IMF program, Dissanayake intends to work with the IMF, reviewing and tailoring the program to suit Sri Lanka’s specific needs.
In the geopolitical arena, Dissanayake believes Sri Lanka should play a more active role in regional security and cooperation, ensuring the country’s stability and its relationships with neighboring nations. His message of practical solutions, economic reform, and regional cooperation has resonated with millions of voters, positioning him as a leader who understands the real issues faced by Sri Lankans.
