Advice to the Muslim Community Ahead of the Presidential Election..!

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -01.Sep.2024, 4.10 pm) As Sri Lanka approaches the upcoming presidential election, the Muslim community faces a crucial decision in determining which candidate truly represents their interests. Recent events have highlighted the importance of carefully considering the track record and actions of those seeking their vote.

One of the main candidates, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, is supported by figures such as Ali Sabri, Prasanna Ranatunga, Nimal Lanza, and Sujeeshwara Senadeera .

These individuals were involved in the controversial decision to enforce the cremation of Muslim COVID-19 victims, despite the objections and deep distress it caused within the Muslim community. While President Ranil later promised to establish a commission to investigate this issue during a meeting with the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), he failed to apologize or take action against the civil servants responsible for the decision. This has left many in the Muslim community questioning his commitment to addressing their concerns.

On the other hand, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa also met with ACJU officials, accompanied by several SJB Muslim politicians. However, the presence of figures like Channa Jayasumana, G. L. Peiris, and Dullas Alahapperuma within the SJB—who previously supported the cremation policy—raises doubts about the sincerity of their commitment to Muslim rights. Additionally, reports have surfaced that a prominent Muslim politician in Sajith's camp, Patali Champika Ranawaka, allegedly delayed the handover of 500 houses built for Muslim tsunami victims, further complicating the party's stance.

In contrast, the National People's Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has consistently advocated for the rights of the Muslim community, making 35 speeches in Parliament seeking justice on their behalf. His consistent support has earned him a reputation as a genuine ally of the Muslim cause.

Prominent Muslim politicians like Rauf Hakeem and Rishad Bathiudeen, now aligned with Sajith Premadasa, have also come under criticism for their failure to challenge the cremation policy in the Supreme Court when they had the chance. This inaction has led to calls within the community to hold them accountable.

Given these considerations, it is crucial for the Muslim community to carefully evaluate which candidate has consistently acted in their best interests and who can be trusted to protect their rights moving forward. The upcoming election presents an opportunity to choose a leader who will truly represent the Muslim community and address their concerns with the seriousness they deserve.
