(Lanka-e-News -22.Aug.2024, 9.10 pm) Hirunika Premachandra, the daughter of the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, faces a troubling dilemma within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). Her father, a respected trade unionist and politician, was brutally murdered on October 8, 2011, at Walpola Junction, allegedly by Duminda Silva. Today, Hirunika finds herself politically aligned with the family of her father’s murderer, creating a significant conflict within the SJB.
This situation emerged after SJB leader Sajith Premadasa, who had once vowed to fight for justice for Bharatha Lakshman, struck a deal with Reno de Silva, the brother of Duminda Silva and owner of the controversial Hiru Media network. As a result, Hiru Media, once critical of the SJB, has now become a vocal supporter of Premadasa, with their popular show host Chamuditha Samarawickrama launching relentless attacks on the NPP while conveniently sparing the SJB leader.
Hirunika, once a leading figure in the protest movement against the Gotabaya Rajapaksa regime and a symbol of resistance during the Aragalaya, is now forced to confront this uncomfortable reality. The alliance between Premadasa and Hiru Media raises questions about the integrity of the SJB’s leadership and whether principles have been sacrificed for political gain.
Hirunika, known for her bold activism and her father’s legacy, must now decide whether to stand up against this alliance or quietly accept the political direction of the party she represents. This dilemma challenges not only her personal convictions but also her role as a politician who has consistently positioned herself as a champion of justice and people’s rights.
As she navigates this critical juncture, many supporters are urging Hirunika to honor her father’s legacy by rejecting any association with those linked to his murder and to remain true to the values he stood for.
