(Lanka-e-News -09.Aug.2024, 11.00 pm) Rishad Bathiudeen, leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC), is a controversial figure in Sri Lankan politics. With a limited voter base of less than 50,000, Bathiudeen has been accused of attempting to sell his support to the highest bidder in the upcoming presidential election. His actions have sparked outrage among many, particularly within the Muslim community, who view him as a self-serving politician rather than a legitimate leader.
Bathiudeen has been demanding significant concessions from presidential candidates, including cabinet ministerial positions and the clearing of all corruption and criminal cases against him. This has raised questions about his motives and integrity, as he appears to be using his limited political influence as a bargaining chip for personal gain.
Bathiudeen's past is marred by a series of allegations, including corruption and illicit activities. Despite being a non-qualified civil engineer, he has been involved in re-export corruption charges and has close ties to New Delhi. His small voter base of around 50,000 has not deterred him from trying to position himself as a kingmaker in the political arena.
There are also serious accusations against Bathiudeen regarding the misuse of funds received from Qatar and other Arab governments for rebuilding houses in Mannar. Despite the significant funds, no houses were constructed, and the money reportedly ended up in Malaysian banks, raising concerns about embezzlement.
During his tenure as a cabinet minister, Bathiudeen's brothers allegedly exploited his position to re-export certain products to India, circumventing import duties and engaging in questionable practices. Furthermore, his spouse was arrested on charges related to the murder of a house servant, adding to the controversy surrounding him.
Many Sri Lankan Muslims are increasingly disillusioned with Bathiudeen, viewing him as a wheeler-dealer rather than a respectable politician. They believe that he has lost the support of Muslim voters and should be taught a lesson in the upcoming elections. His reputation has been further tarnished by past investigations by Interpol for terror-related crimes, from which he was reportedly shielded by the government.
Rishad Bathiudeen's attempts to auction his support in the upcoming presidential election have only served to highlight the deep-seated issues surrounding his political career. With his influence dwindling and his reputation in tatters, the upcoming elections may be a crucial test of his political strength—or lack thereof. It remains to be seen whether Bathiudeen can muster enough support to remain relevant, or if he will finally face the consequences of his controversial actions.
