NPP Leads Sri Lankan Presidential Election: New Survey by EU

-By A Staff Writer

(Lanka-e-News -16.July.2024, 11.00 PM)  The National People's Power (NPP) party is currently leading the race for the Sri Lankan presidential election, according to a new survey conducted by the European Union. The survey results indicate a significant shift in voter preference, with 53% of the selected sample favoring the NPP.

In second place is Sajith Premadasa, who has garnered only 24% of the electorate's preference. The survey highlights that Sajith’s credibility has been heavily scrutinized, particularly by voters aged 18 to 39, who are questioning the legitimacy of his degree from the London School of Economics (LSE). Many voters are concerned about whether Sajith has falsified his educational qualifications, which has led to widespread distrust.

The survey revealed that the electorate is hesitant to support a candidate who may have misrepresented his academic credentials. This sentiment is echoed across the sampled voters, who express doubt in Sajith’s trustworthiness as a politician.

In a distant third is the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), currently holding only 6% of the vote. The SLPP is struggling to find a suitable candidate for the upcoming election, as its leaders are not in favor of backing another party candidate.

The party remains undecided on whether to support the current president as a common candidate or to nominate their own candidate. This indecision has led to delays in their selection process, with their presidential campaign being outsourced to Dammika Perera, leading businessman.

President Ranil with less than 5%  rating, a controversial figure with a questionable past involving a bond scam and the Batalanda torture chamber.

Despite these uncertainties, a significant number of floating voters (12%) in Sri Lanka remain undecided. However, the NPP appears to be gaining traction among these voters due to their perceived credibility and commitment to fighting corruption and promoting prosperity in the country.

As the election approaches, the NPP's lead suggests a growing trust in their leadership and policies among the Sri Lankan electorate.
