(Lanka-e-news- 22.Feb.2015, 11.50PM) It is with utmost delight that we are revealing herein a report of an incident where an individual who fell from the ‘world’s end’ top was saved .This pleasantly shocking escape took place yesterday (21) in Sri Lanka (SL) where the internationally famed ‘world’s end’ is. It is a Netherlands national who was so saved through an operation conducted by the Sinha regiment of the SL army.
The Netherlands national ,Mathalin and his wife Linda had chosen SL to spend their honeymoon after their wedding. They have yesterday morning gone to see the ‘world’s end ‘ in SL. After reaching the peak of ‘world’s end’ , Mathalan had tried to take a photograph of his wife. While trying to focus the camera , Mathalan had kept moving backwards when he had suddenly lost his balance , and fallen off the peak of ‘world’s end’ when the onlookers have started to scream.
Mathalin who fell 35 feet below had held on to a branch of a tree where he had remained for about three hours. The other tourists too who were there had tied the clothes of theirs , and passed it down to rescue him.
Although the Air force immediately took action and sent a Bell 212 helicopter , but because of the adverse weather conditions , the helicopter could not reach the place of the accident . Later , a team of life saving security soldiers of the army’s 3 rd Sinha regiment of the Nuwara eliya camp appeared on the scene.
Lieutenant Colonel Amitha Perera and major Ratnathileke were in charge of this life saving operation , and brave Corporal Sudesh Nalinda undertook the task risking his own life to save the Netherlands national. He went down perilously to the place where Mathalin was precariously hanging , and saved him.
The Corporal who rescued Mathalin later revealed that if the rescue had got delayed by 20 more minutes , it would not have been possible to save Mathalin. The latter who sustained minor injuries was admitted to the Nuwara eliya hospital.
Mathalin after he was discharged from the hospital visited the army camp that saved him , and thanked everyone there. The newly married couple joined the soldiers to have meals with them.
It will not be out of place if we recall the incident that took place in Tangalla some time ago : in sharp contrast with the world’s end incident ,in Tangalle ,a British tourist was killed and his fiancée was gang raped by politicos in a hotel in Tangalla when this tourist couple who arrived in Sri Lanka were staying in that hotel . On that occasion , the brutal Rajapakse regime gave support and protection to its political culprits . But now the people can heave a sigh of relief that the bestial barbaric Rajapakse era is finally over as the Rajapakses are ousted from power by the people.
Now , since the advent of the Maithri yugaya (Maithri era) tourists are looked after like its own children. This latest life saving incident is a good illustration. It is worthy of note that while Mathalin was hanging on the branch of the tree for several hours ,nobody tried to rape Linda unlike under the bestial Rajapakse regime. Her husband was saved before her own eyes. As humans one must live to save another , not kill brutally because one has inordinate powers , or commit rapes on helpless forlorn women .
