-President and P.M. take flight to meet those affected
(Lanka-e-News -18.May.2016, 11.30PM) Following landslides and floods due to the inclement weather conditions , the number of deaths has risen to 37 while 27 persons have gone missing so far , according to the disaster management center.
In addition 25 oersons have suffered injuries and over 3000 houses have been damaged . 82824 families comprising 352374 members are affected by these disasters. The disaster management center also revealed there are 48998 families comprising 223687 members in 375 refugee camps .
Bodies of 17 persons who died in the landslides at Aranayake Samasara kanda , Darunugama had been discovered while about 129 persons are believed to have been buried alive in the tragedy, unofficial sources stated.
70 houses have also been devastated.
The president and the prime minister toured the disaster struck Aranayake by plane .
Meanwhile owing to the Kelani ganga spilling over immense damage has resulted. .Kaduwela , Hanwella, Ranala, Ambatale, Egoda Kelaniya, Kolonnawa, Wellampitiya, Orugodawatte , Kotikawatte and Sedawatte have suffered most .About 20,000 families in those areas are affected.
When JVP M.P. Vijitha Herath made a request to the speaker to furnish a report on the situation in the disaster struck country , the speaker replied he would take a decision after discssing with the government.
The government has allocated Rs. 150 million towards relief operations for the affected people.
The housing ministry has funds to help in the restoration of every house that has been damaged , and action will be taken to provide shelter in safe places to those who are in landslide prone areas , after identifying those places , the minister of housing Sajith Premadasa assured in parliament.
